Last night I had the honor and privilege to see Laverne Cox, an advocate for the LGBT community, speak at Southern Oregon University. In her lecture, Ain’t I A Woman, Laverne Cox not only spoke about her own struggles about growing up in a society that did not approve of her being a trans-woman, but also about universal struggles that most, if not all, women face growing up. She was such an inspirational speaker with many important messages to deliver. One of my favorite things that she said was, “Success is the best revenge”. The overall message that I took away was acceptance, acceptance of all ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, lifestyles, cultures, and ideologies. It was a fresh reminder to strive to be a better and kinder human being. I have so much love and respect for Laverne Cox and she will always be one of my idols.
